An opera by David Sawer and Rory Mullarkey, based on a novel by Roberto Bolaño. A local civil servant’s obsession with a beautiful figure skater drives him to embezzle funds to build her a secret ice rink. When an unlikely group of characters discovers them, tension mounts until a murder on the ice unravels everything. Garsington Opera‘s commission The Skating Rink, written by leading British composer David Sawer with award-winning playwright Rory Mullarkey, premiered in July 2018. Based on Chilean author Roberto Bolaño’s novel it tells the thrilling tale of jealousy, political corruption and the lengths we go to for the ones we love.

The most crude and atrocious institutional violence of the Spanish State hides behind a true dark figure, an abyss into which this documentary peers through 30 firsthand accounts.

An amazing cast of stars and their professional partners compete each week on a spectacular ice rink. Couples will need to be perfectly in sync, since the ice is unforgiving of even the smallest mistake.

Katarzyna Gondek Biography A graduate of film studies and documentary course in Wajda School. Author of films and literary forms. She wrote and published two novels (HORROR VACUI and OTOLITH), a poetry book (PLEXUS) and a couple of short stories. A hunter for the surreal. Her latest film works are THE FIGURE, a poetic comedy about a gigantic plastic pope and HOSANNA, a short narrative that also lightly deconstructs a few religious myths. Right now she is working on a short fiction, a Polish/Belgium coproduction called "DEER BOY” and a documentary about disappearing memories ("THE BLACK CURTAIN"). Her films have been shown and sometimes awarded on festivals allover the world. Winner of the WARTO Award in the film category (2014), nominated for Barańczak literary scholarship award (2015).
